What "real substance" means for a Hungarian company

A company that exists only on paper does not survive scrutiny. Substance is what makes an EU company genuinely yours — and genuinely defensible.

When foreign owners set up a company in another EU country, the first question a bank, a tax authority or a counterparty asks is simple: is this a real business, or a letterbox? The answer is substance — evidence that the company actually operates where it is registered.

Substance is the ordinary furniture of a working company: a real address that is more than a mailbox, the ability to make decisions locally, books kept to the local standard, and someone accountable on the ground. None of it is exotic. It is proof that the company is run, not merely owned.

For most owners that means one of two things: the owner is active in Hungary, present often enough to direct the company, or a Hungarian managing director runs the day-to-day. Either is defensible.
